Bearcats come calling on fourth-ranked Panthers

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

02/14/2009 - Pittsburgh, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The fourth-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers welcome the suddenly resurgent Cincinnati Bearcats to the Petersen Events Center this afternoon for a Big East showdown.

The Panthers are an impressive 22-2 on the season and bring a four-game win streak into this contest. A 70-59 win over West Virginia on Monday improved Pittsburgh's league record to 9-2 on the season, still within striking distance of league-leading and top-ranked Connecticut (11-1).

The Bearcats have stepped it up a notch of late and currently sit at 7-5 in the tough Big East. Cincinnati has won three straight games and five of its last six overall, including Wednesday's 71-61 decision over St. John's.

Cincinnati holds a 7-5 advantage in the all-time series with Pittsburgh, but the Panthers have closed the gap a bit, with wins in four of the last five meetings.

The Bearcats don't dominate in any area of the game, but somehow the team has found a way to do enough to continue to win. Offensively, Cincinnati is averaging a pedestrian 69.9 ppg, getting it done on just .428 shooting. There isn't a whole lot of scoring depth, with junior Deonta Vaughn leading the way at 16.0 ppg. The team's leading distributor as well (114 assists), Vaughn would be much more dangerous, if not for his anemic .387 shooting percentage. Freshman Yancy Gates is the only other Bearcat averaging double figures at 10.7 ppg, while leading the way on the glass (6.2 rpg). Senior Mike Williams is just under double figures at 10.7 ppg and gives the team another body on the boards (5.8 rpg). In the win over St. John's Gates led the charge with a career-high 21 points. Three others finished in double figures, as Cincinnati shot a season-high .626 from the field. Vaughn netted 14 points in the win, followed by Williams and freshman Dion Dixon, who chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Panthers are sitting in a good spot in the Big East thanks to stellar play at both ends of the floor. The result is an impressive +16.2 scoring margin. The team has been effective offensively, hitting 48 percent of its shots, leading to a healthy 78.0 ppg. The strength of the team resides in the frontcourt, in the form of standout forward Sam Young and big man DeJuan Blair in the middle. Young is converting 48.5 percent of the time and leads the team with nearly 18 points per game (17.9). Blair is hitting 59.4 percent of his shots and is averaging a double-double with 15.3 points and 12.6 rebounds per game. Levance Fields has emerged as one of the nation's premier court generals, averaging 11.1 ppg, while doling out 7.4 apg. A 10-1 run in the second half gave the Panthers all the cushion they would need in knocking off rival West Virginia this week. It was definitely a spirited and physical game, as the two teams combined for a whopping 38 personal fouls. Young was 7-of-12 from the floor and led the team with 20 points. Fields added 13 points, while dishing out seven assists. Blair actually had more rebounds (nine) than points (eight) in the game.

Stanley Cup betting

New York, NY – October 3, 2007 – The dress rehearsal is over! The NHL preseason has ended and now that fans have had a glimpse of what is to come it is time to hit the book! Stanley Cup odds are live at MySportsbook.com, the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino.

The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings remain on top of the odds charts after an impressive start in the preseason. Betting lines opened for both teams at 6-1 in June. Since then the Sens have fallen to 7-1 and the Red Wings are now caught in a pack including the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, all at 10-1.

MySportsbook.com has also posted props on each team’s point total for the regular season. The Senators lead the charge at 108.5 followed by the Ducks at 106.5. Detroit will attempt a repeat for the prize as the Red Wings are deadlocked with the Predators at 104.5 a piece. The temporary loss of highly touted rookie Evgeni Malkin puts a lot of pressure on the stick of assistant captain Sidney Crosby - his lowly Pittsburgh Penguins are listed at 71.5.

Even if bettors are not brave enough to put their money on the underdog, an early bet on the favorites at sportsbook.com tends to produce bigger payouts than a mid-season wager. Placing a $1,000 bet last summer on the Detroit Red Wings or Ottawa Senators would have paid out to $8,000 and $10,000 respectively, opposed to a $2,500 or $3,000 payout at the beginning of the playoffs.
