05/03/2009 - Rome, Italy (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Rafael Nadal defeated Novak Djokovic to claim his fourth Italian Masters title in five years, extending his clay-court winning streak to 30 consecutive matches.
Nadal needed just over two hours to defeat the third-seeded Djokovic, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 and improve to a staggering 147-6 on the clay surface since 2005, including an unblemished 16-0 in 2009.
The top-seeded Spanish superstar had won three consecutive titles here from 2005-2007 but fell to compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero in the second round of last year's tournament.
Sunday marked the first match in the tournament where Nadal allowed his opponent to win more than three games in an individual set. Djokovic was able to break the world's top-ranked player twice in the opening set, but Nadal broke back each time and cruised in the tiebreaker.
After the tight set, Nadal dominated in the second, breaking Djokovic in each of his two opportunities to win easily.
Nadal claimed his fifth title of 2009, having won clay court titles in Monte Carlo and Barcelona to go with hardcourt wins at the Australian Open and Indian Wells. This tournament is in preparation for the French Open, which he has won four straight times in four attempts. His record at Roland Garros stands at a perfect 28-0.
Djokovic was the defending champion at this tournament after topping Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in 2008, but the loss in this tournament finale cost him his world No. 3 ranking, which will now be held by Andy Murray on May 11. The Serb star dropped to 1-3 in finals this year and has lost three straight such matches.
Nadal moved to 8-0 against Djokovic on clay and 13-4 against him overall, including three wins in 2009. This title was the 36th of his career, and he collected $565,000 for his efforts.
